Meeting Update 09/03/2013 - Eddie
Pulsed Jets
Spent most of my time last week trying to get the 2.5D pulsed jet simulations working. Met with both Jonathan and Baowei a few times. We had decided on a set-up to try on kraken that we were sure would work. However, restarts are still being triggered, and it is still unclear why.
From previous runs, the refinement looked strange. There were small patches of high refinement scattered throughout the jet beam. After changing a few parameters and adding some error flag buffering, I was able to clear this up. The latest kraken run is at the resolution that I want. It does density gradient based refinement up to level 3, and cooling time threshold refinement to level 7. You can see from the first few frames that the mesh looks reasonable…

Baowei was making better progress on bluehive and on our local machines, so I decided that maybe the problem with the restarts is machine dependent. I have a run going on Grass which seems to be progressing just fine. It would probably take on the order of weeks to finish completely though since it's only running on 8 cores.
I have a run on bluestreak using 256 cores which is progressing faster than the run on Grass, but is also triggering restarts. I am currently setting up a run on bluehive, so we'll see how that goes.
Other Stuff
- Haven't heard back from Pat yet regarding the numbers I had sent him.
- I plan on finishing the paper within the next week or two. I will write it as though i have all the results and figures, which can be added in later. Maybe this will just be a 2.5D paper though?
- Went to a Geneseo physics alumni event last Saturday. We were celebrating the physics department's 50th anniversary, and also the fact that Geneseo now leads the country in number of physics bachelor degrees awarded yearly. There were some other interesting things as well…
- I briefly met their new astronomy professor, Annie Pellerin.
- My work that I did as an undergrad there is referenced in a new textbook by Koberlein and Meisel (a former professor of mine), and it is titled Astrophysics Through Computation: With Mathematica Support.
- They're looking for potential colloquium speakers and asked me if I would be interested. So I might be giving a colloquium there either this semester or in the spring.
- RIT has a student named Dave Anderson who is a senior this year. He's interested in going to graduate school for astronomy, and he's considering UR. More specifically, he is interested in our research group and would like to meet all of us to see if this might be a good fit for him.
