Procedures for backing up your data

  • Procedures for backing up your old computing data
    1. create a folder on /media/tmp070813 and name it with username_date. For example: bliu_07092013
    2. MOVE — NOT COPY the data you want to back up to the folder you created
    3. Make detailed notes about what these data are and save it as username_date.txt. For example: bliu_07092013.txt
    4. I will tar these data to the 4TB hard drive once everybody is done moving their data. And I will clean everything on /media/tmp070813 after that.
    5. Old data will be backed-up & cleaned twice every year. Our first backup date is Aug 1st 2013

  • This is not 'backing up' but really archiving?
  • And the large datasets will usually be comprised of large datasets connected to a run directory that will be part of a research project…
  • It might make sense for each person to go through their old data and tar up each run directory and then to put these into appropriate project folders, and then to put these project folders under a single folder with their name. This will avoid 2 TB tar files and should make it easier to find relevant data down the road.
